One of the most surprising things I learned about during my internship was just how many plants become diseased and unable to produce healthy product. Though there were natural remedies we tried to use to bring some of the plants back, many times they would be too far gone. When this happened we would have to walk through the crops and pull up all the dead plants by their roots. By pulling up these dead plants, we made it so other plants would be less likely to obtain the same diseased as the infected ones. Even though we were pulling up the plants for a good reason, it felt like we were depleting the crop. One way to refer to this might be "preservation through destruction", a principle which is seemingly necessary in the world of farming
