ABOUT ME

(ADAM ALGER)

I am currently an undergraduate at Rhode Island College majoring in Environmental Studies.By interning at Franklin Farm I was able to familiarize myself with various aspects of land management. I was taught how crucial it is to learn the lay of the land. One reason this held importance was so I didn’t drive in the wrong sport and flip the tractor... A more technical reason is this: by knowing the land, you can determine what slopes, hills, and ditches are transporting water runoff of which will have a negative impact on the crops. By knowing how it's transported, it becomes easier to figure out ways to mitigate the runoff. Through what I learned about land management, crop management, and land conservation, I have become a more well rounded and knowledgeable individual. I hope to further expand on all of these things in my future endeavors while conveying the knowledge I have learned to all those around me.

MY MENTOR

Early on in my internship I was introduced to a man named Frank Matta who became my mentor. He's a straight shooter who tells it how it is. Through his over 50 years of farming experience, he was able to provide me with expertise knowledge on proper farming techniques. His teaching proved he was able to work efficiently and effectively. Being a volunteer on the Providence Watershed, Frank was able to introduce me to a new perspective about water management, making me see and look at all aspects of it differently.

PROJECTS

FRANKLIN FARM

Franklin Farm is a 100% volunteer run farm. Though the farm strictly grows vegetables, it was originally a dairy farm. Volunteers gather two times a week to harvest the crops which consist of cucumbers, zucchinis, summer squash, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and many more. Once all the vegetables are harvested, they are boxed up and sent out to soup kitchens and shelters. The main goal of the farm is to provide a safe chemical free environment for people to learn from - all well giving to those who are experiencing food insecurities. Every year hundreds of people join the farms team an help give back to their community.
